Friendship Presbyterian Church Is Part of the
Synod of South Atlantic
The mission of the Synod of the South Atlantic is faithfully to serve Jesus Christ and the Presbyterian Church (USA) by supporting the ministries of our 16 presbyteries and encouraging cooperation among sessions, presbyteries, and the General Assembly.
The synod serves this mission through:
-
Supporting the development of new churches
-
Supporting the transformation of congregations
-
Supporting the development of racial/ethnic congregations
-
Providing scholarships for theological education
-
Covenanting with church-related institutions within the bounds of the synod
-
Fulfilling the constitutional and administrative responsibilities assigned to the synod in the Book of Order
-
Facilitating conversation between the governing bodies of the church
-
Offering pastoral care and support to presbytery staffs
The SYNOD is involved in two areas of programming: Racial Ethnic Ministries and New Church Development. More than 160 of our 997 congregations have a racial ethnic membership of 20 percent or more, which includes persons of African American, Hispanic, Korean and Native American heritages. The presbyteries in our synod have organized 33 new congregations since 1998, and more are planned.
